11/2/07 Multiengine Lesson - Today I took a lesson in a Piper Seminole with an instructor who flies for a cargo company. For the first time ever, I got to try my hand at simulated engine failures in a twin. We flew around the Oshkosh area for 1.2 hours and did three simulated engine failures. I even did an approach and landing on one engine with the wind gusting to 29 knots. That was a very informative lesson and a lot of fun. It was really the first "new" thing I have learned since my commercial pilot training.
11/9/07 Lunch In Iola - My student Steve and I flew into Central County Airport for the weekly Friday lunch. Kent flew up solo from Madison in the 182 to join us. It was an unusually educational visit where we all witnessed a few "stupid pilot tricks." The lunch was well-attended. The food and hangar talk were great as usual. Flurries started to appear as we were leaving, but the path was clear back to Brennand. There was a snow squall to the south that forced Kent to land and wait out the weather in Waupaca, just a few miles south of Iola. 11/12/07 Night XC to Madison - Tonight my student Dave and I flew to Madison for Dave's required night cross-country training. Dave learned how tricky it can be to spot an airport in a city at night. Then we both had to use our imagination in order to line up for our assigned runway, which didn't stand out from the background until we were nearly lined up for it. I always try to take my students to at least one airport in a bigger city for their night cross-country. We logged 2.3 hours tonight including an extra trip around the pattern at Brennand. 11/25/07 Second Multiengine Lesson - I've decided to officially start my multiengine training here at my school. I still can't afford it, but I can't afford not to, either. We have a Piper Seminole like the one I flew earlier this month in Oshkosh. My student Chris was in Green Bay to do the oral part of his private pilot checkride. It was too windy for him to fly, but not too windy for me to fly the Seminole. My boss Woody is going to be my main instructor. He led me through an introductory lesson while Chris rode in the back (I knew he'd have fun!). I did steep turns, an approach stall, a departure stall, slow flight, a drag demo, an engine out procedure, and two landings. I was sloppy on everything and behind the airplane, using a checklist I had never seen. It was very fun though, and I can only get better! I logged 1.2 hours.
11/26/07 A New Private Pilot and my Third Multiengine Lesson - My student Chris finished up his private pilot checkride today by doing the flight with Woody. He had started training with me in 2005 when he was only 15 years old. He was my first-ever student. Now he is a new private pilot at 17 years old. Everyone is proud of him for his acheivement. Chris is looking forward to taking his first passengers for rides. Meanwhile, I flew with a different instructor while Woody was busy. Greg helped me review what I learned in the Seminole yesterday and introduced me to the Vmc demo. I also logged an ILS approach. I logged 1.3 hours.
