8/3/06 Fifth Student Solo - It was a long day with 5.2 hours of flying for me but it ended well, with soloing a fifth person. As always, it was exciting for me to watch another student fly alone for the first time. This time it was at Waupaca. It was a perfect evening for it, with a calm wind at sunset and a clear sky. We flew back under the moon. 8/4/06 Flew to Lunch & Dinner - There's just something about flying and food. Today I went to Iola for the second week in a row. My young student Chris made me pretty proud by doing the landing at the tiny grass strip. I had four students today, and my last one brought his son for a flight to Shawano for dinner. I flew 4.5 hours today. 8/5/06 Accidentally Flying Into a Fly-In - I'm usually pretty aware of all the fly-in events around here, but one caught me by surprise this morning. A student and I went to New Holstein to practice takeoffs and landings on the grass. I wondered why the radio was so busy. Then as we got closer I noticed there was a fly-in event happening with a car show on the airport! Oops! Rather than waste the trip, we took advantage of the opportunity to fly with a lot of traffic around. We used the grass runway along with a Piper Cub and a biplane while everyone else was using the pavement. The runways intersect, so it required a ballet dance of coordination, communication, and good timing. It was pretty intense and was a good experience. My next student also needed to practice grass takeoffs and landings, but rather than go back to wreak havoc on New Holstein, I chose Iola instead. That airport is much more difficult but we had it all to ourselves. 8/7/06 Gotta Love My Job... - There are days when I whine about being poor, having to drive so far to work, and my long hours. Then there are days like today where my work isn't even work! My student Eddie needed to do another cross-country so today he, his wife, and I flew to Minocqua. While there, we ate at Paul Bunyan's, played a round of mini-golf, and stocked up on candy from Dan's Minocqua Fudge. It was 3.4 hours of flying and everything ran smoothly. 8/12/06 Short Cross-Country - After a flight lesson, I rode in Ted's Piper Archer to fly to Manitowoc for lunch today. Then later a student and I went on a cross-country to Adams/Friendship where we visited his parents and had a quick dinner. I snapped this picture on the way back. For some reason it seems that a lot of my meals lately involve a flight to wherever I'm eating... Strange how it keeps working out that way. Fun stuff.
